Open innovation ecosystem

The fast and far-reaching change currently taking place in the automotive industry and the industry’s place in tomorrow’s mobility lends weight to Valeo’s “open innovation” strategy, enabling it to offer innovative solutions and stand at the epicenter of new mobility usages

In its strategy to connect locally to innovation ecosystems and to partner with the best startups for mutual growth, Valeo is launching its first startup acceleration program in India. It is focused on electric mobility for 2- and 3-wheelers and will offer startups developing electric motors the opportunity to benefit from Valeo’s expertise in the area to accelerate the development of their prototypes in order to address the very dynamic Indian market.

Valeo’s open innovation ecosystem is built on numerous collaborations with universities, laboratories, start-ups and major industrial groups. This allows it to shorten development cycles for its products and time-to-market for its innovations.

Valeo’s open innovation strategy includes research partnerships, stakeholdings in tech start-ups, investments in venture capital funds and the creation of joint ventures or targeted acquisitions.

Among the examples of partnerships throughout the years, we can quote Safran and the acquisition of peiker, Spheros, gestigon, FTE Automotive, Ichikoh (takeover) and the Valeo Siemens eAutomotive joint venture, specialized in the development of high-power solutions for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles and Kapec joint venture, world leader in torque converters.

To further boost innovation, for 5 years in a row the Group has held the Valeo Innovation Challenge, an international competition which rewards the inventions of some of the world’s brightest ideas of students to make cars more intelligent, intuitive and green.

In 2018, Valeo and the University of Liège (Belgium) created a chair to develop skills in the area of health and well-being applied to automotive industry.

In early 2019, Valeo signed an agreement with Télécom ParisTech engineering school, involving a chair focusing on artificial intelligence and data science, which provides extra impetus to the Valeo.ai center, created in 2017.
