Valeo’s commitment to sustainable development is part of its Genes. It concerns all of its employees, at every level of the Group, as well as its customers and suppliers. This Group-wide commitment is fundamental, because we can only be effective in our actions if everyone is involved.

All the Group’s functional networks – Purchasing, Logistics, R&D, Human Resources, Communications, Environment, Risk & Insurance – as well as its aftermarket business, are mobilized behind this commitment.

Valeo is a manufacturer whose activities, design and manufacturing processes and products contribute to the progressive decarbonization of the automotive sector. The Group has become the partner of choice in the drive to offer greener, better connected mobility solutions..

Whether this relates to reducing CO2 emissions, cutting energy use at our plants, or operating in a responsible way in our relations with employees and wider society, Valeo is a major player that sets itself ambitious targets.

After nine years of constant and resolute engagement with the United Nations through the Global Compact and its Ten Principles, the Group has widened its approach by adopting, in 2011, the Global Reporting Initiative’s international benchmark for CSR reporting. This enables us to optimize our application of international rules and standards. Furthermore, Valeo is in regular contact with independent bodies such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the SAM Dow Jones Sustainability Index in order to consolidate its progress and identify further actions to be taken.

The deployment of a Group sustainable development policy is a way of driving progress in line with our global strategy for winning new customers, expanding into new regions, and securing future growth. This commitment is materialized by a CSR agreement signed in 2012.

When considering working with any new partner or individual (e.g. suppliers, service providers, laboratories, universities, employees), we make sure they agree to uphold each of our sustainable development principles.

To achieve ongoing and measurable improvement with regard to its our commitments, Valeo is constantly anticipating changes in industrial and environmental legislation. This resolute approach is particularly reflected in the development of our innovations at the best possible cost, in order to benefit the greatest number of people.

The role of Research & Development

Developing effective mobility solutions for the future requires dialog at a very early stage with relevant stakeholders such as regulators and research institutions.

Growing awareness of climate change among governments is having important and direct consequences on the automotive sector. These changes require constant and increasingly intense efforts in terms of research and development aimed at the progressive decarbonization of road mobility, involving all parties (end users, automakers, consumer associations, regulators). One of Valeo’s objectives is to help automakers meet regulatory quotas by proposing technological solutions at the best price and groundbreaking innovations in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Valeo is also the vice-president of ERTRAC (European Road Transport Research Advisory Board), a multi-bodied European technology platform in charge of driving and consolidating European transport policy at the European Commission. One of its roles is to produce road maps on the future of transport, more specifically on the electrification of vehicles and the development of research centers in Europe.

Strict regulations

Une réglementation exigeante
Through the l’International Transport Forum (an inter-governmental organization operating under the auspices of the OECD), Valeo plays an active role in exploring avenues for the progressive decarbonization of the automotive sector.

“Eco-design” process

R&D incorporates the environmental aspects of products. Since 2007, this eco-design approach has been formally included in product development processes. It consists of assessing all environmental impacts of a product, at every stage in its lifecycle:

  • Type, number and quantity of raw materials
  • Production, packaging, transport and distribution
  • Use and maintenance
  • Dismantling, recycling, reuse, reconditioning, disposal

Valeo also pays close attention to the disposal of dangerous substances in products.
