Global warming

A closer look at CO2

1C+2O = CO2 (carbon dioxide)

is a chemical compound made up of one carbon and two oxygen atoms. Although not harmful in itself, CO2 is considered the main source of global warming.

30% increase in CO2 concentration

in the atmosphere since the beginning of the industrial age. In 100 years the amount of CO2 has increased from 278 ppmv (parts per million in volume) to reach 382 ppmv 2007.

25%increase in CO2 emissions

from transport in the European Union since 1990, with the greatest increase coming from the transport of goods.

120 grams per km: the regulatory objective

the European Commission will set for automakers for 2012. In 2005 cars were still emitting 162 grams per km. Regulations are set to tighten even further in 2020: 95 grams per km. CO2 data:

  • 2007 report by the European Environment Agency.
  • Fourth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published by UNESCO in Paris on March 3, 2007.
