Steering Wheel: Electronics

Last update: 12 Jul. 2024

What are Steering Wheel Electronics?

Steering Wheel Electronics represent the integration of Hands-On Detection (HOD) and heating functionality within the steering wheel. The Hands-On Detection system ensures that the driver remains actively engaged and in control during transitions between manual and assisted/automated driving modes (Level 2, 3, 4). It ensures the safety of the driver and is thus relevant for European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro-NCAP) testing from 2023.

Valeo’s innovative approach to HOD using a heating mat integrated into the steering wheel eliminates the need for additional layers and reduces sheeting wheel variants from 3 to 1, which results in substantial cost savings.
