A Hands-Off Road Trip of the Future: Valeo Cruise4U car makes a journey around the U.S.

San Francisco, August 1, 2016 – Valeo's Cruise4U partially automated car, previously demonstrated at CES in Las Vegas in January 2016, today embarks on a 13,000 mile journey – a futuristic road trip around the U.S. that is scheduled to conclude back in San Francisco on September 15.

  • 13,000 miles and 30 cities: the longest partially automated drive ever attempted in North America.
  • A decisive step toward making automated driving available to everyone.

In partially automated driving mode, the trip will include stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, New York, Miami, San Antonio and San Diego. The vehicle will travel both day and night in real traffic conditions.

Valeo Cruise4U lets drivers experience the comfort and convenience of being driven, on the highway in normal or traffic jam situations. When conditions allow, the driver can decide to either control the vehicle manually or monitor as Valeo Cruise4U manages steering, accelerating and braking.

The Valeo SCALA™ laser scanner is the key enabler in the Cruise4U system. The Valeo SCALA™ laser device scans the area in front of the vehicle and detects vehicles, motorbikes, pedestrians and static obstacles like trees, parked vehicles and guard rails – all with an extremely high level of accuracy. It works during the day and at night, when the car is driving at both high and low speeds. Using the collected data, the scanner creates a map of the environment allowing it to analyze and anticipate events around the vehicle.

On the Hands-Off U.S. Tour, the Valeo SCALA™ will work with a front-facing camera to scan the environment ahead of the vehicle, detecting any obstacles with extreme precision, and four corner radars that ensure safe lane changing.

The Cruise4U technologies enable Valeo, which is already a market leader in driving assistance systems, to promote innovative active safety features and automated driving.

Providing a unique opportunity to adjust the demonstrator to real-life driving and travel conditions, Valeo’s Hands-Off U.S. road trip represents a decisive step toward making automated driving available to everyone.
