Powertrain Electrification Electric Motors

High Voltage Rare Earth Free Electric Motor

Last update: 05 Sep. 2023

What is a Rare Earth Free motor?

Rare earth elements (REE) such as Neodymium and Dysprosium are generally used in permanent magnet motors, in electric vehicles. Valeo developed an EV motor without rare earth element in it.

In 2022, Valeo launched the developpement of the next generation of Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM) with hairpin stator. This is an electric motor without magnet and thus without rare earth.

What are High Voltage Rare Earth Free Electric Motor benefits?

  • Rare-Earth free
  • Carbon footprint reduced by 30% at motor level vs. PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor)
  • High efficiency especially on highway driving cycle perfect for long-range electric vehicle
  • Power density improved by 30% vs. current EESM thanks to hairpin technology
  • Drag-loss free: extension to new portfolio segment
  • System reduced cost (battery)
  • No rare earth volatility risk
